Understated Elegance

Although the owners had enjoyed 15 years with the Blackwood timber and stainless-steel benchtops of their previous kitchen, they felt a new, open-plan extension would give the perfect opportunity for a re-styling. Because the past design had proved such a success, they returned to the author of the previous installation, designer Garrett Hebden, to realise their vision once again. The brief required a kitchen that would afford a more open, easily accessible area with plenty of bench space and storage.

The result is a look so fresh and modern, it’s hard to believe the existing appliances and floor surface are reused. To allow maximum benchtop workspace, Garrett sourced and installed a corner sink — artfully screened from visitors to the openplan dining table by an opaque glass partition by Clas Screens.

Behind sleek, voluminous cupboards and drawers lies a multitude of storage solutions that service both the kitchen and dining areas, including a recess for a future built-in coffee machine. However, it is the full-height customcoloured glass splashback by Clas Screens — which extends all the way across the kitchen and into the dining area — that individualises the design and unifies the space as one large, open area. No doubt the next reincarnation will be a Better Bathrooms & Kitchens, Garrett Hebden design, too.
